  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

don't feel bad about eating western food: i totally cracked when i was alone in tianjin and went to a t.g.i. friday's and it was the best damn chicken fingers, fries and coleslaw i ever ate, all the while watching MTV...

Pace yourself, Claire. Eating western food is hardly cheating; cheating who? And steeling yourself to encounter so many vendors, so many people, poverty, landscape, and life does get exhausting. The mental exertions are ten times more demanding than the physical activity.

Just focus on the good things. And remember, lucky, lucky you!!!

glad you're still having a good time - and agree with everyone that western food isn't cheating :) as long as it wasn't mcdonald's, that is.

I am so excited for you - and excited to see your pictures!

Hi Claire,

Sharon forwarded me the link to your blog. Sounds like you have a fantastic trip. I can't wait to hear all about it and check out your pictures when you return to Chicago.

Have a safe trip back!

Irma
